The error signal is then used to adjust the field current by increasing or decreasing the current flow to an exciter stator, which in turn will lead to a lower or higher voltage at the main stator terminals. The AVR is programmed to keep your voltage at a certain level and it senses that your amount is low. It then diverts a fraction of the electricity supplied by the alternator to the outlet and sends it back to the stator’s exciter coils
